I have given away items worth many 100k and lots of gold to guildmates, but only to them. It seems that I am the old fashioned type who likes to hear a "Thank You!" if I help someone - and Sanji is correct in that too many people just don't do even this little thing.

expectations and stipulations? It's not much to expect people to have common decency...hell I say "thank you" when cops give me tickets for christ sake. Being polite is exactly that...being polite. It shows you have character, class, and tact....something that this "younger" generation lacks completely.

I usually advertise the kind of profession I'm looking for, to give stuff away to.

One time I was announcing "giving away FREE bow dmg x-xx req y to first ranger primary to open trade window, near henchmen." I get this random non-ranger person opening the trade window and I close it again without a word. After the second or third time the dude tries to open the window, I say, "Rangers only" - he only says, "Free" - like I'm being the idiot for not giving it to him.

I haven't given stuff away in a while.... I got a second account and I'm being the greedy one now, keeping my good stuff for my own newbies (and guildies of course). I expect I shall resume the giveaways at some future date.

Perhaps their alternate character is a ranger?

And the comment about money is not important what's with all the greed, well, if money is not important, why do you care?

perhaps it was....I asked a couple of them to log onto their ranger and come back and I'd wait for them. responses like "im not wasting my time" and "you're just a scammer" make me believe they don't really have a ranger.

my original post was in reference to a lack of common decency...not about money. Obviously if I'm giving away items that i could have sold for a decent amount of money I'm not too concerned about gold.

All I'm saying, Algren, is that your problems are self-inflicted. Guild Wars' community nor society on a whole is likely to rid itself of rude punks anytime soon.

You are diving headfirst in the dregs of humanity by shouting your offers of free items in Lion's Arc. If you can not brush off people being rude to you or not even saying thank you, perhaps you need to think out your gift giving better.

I'm of the opinion that you should do as someone else suggested, instead of shouting that you have free stuff in public chat, listen in and try to pick out someone who is asking for a certain thing you have and keep it in whispers.

merely a comment in regards to social nature. I didn't have the time to waste listening in on what people needed. I just had no use for it and wanted the stuff out of my inventory. People being rude is people being rude....the point is that I gave away 11 items and 9 people took them an ran...that speaks highly of a society does it not?

Hell I grew up in a ghetto, hung around with gangbangers, killers, and thieves.....we said thank you when someone did something for us..regardless it was a social observation that I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced...it was a bit dissapointing to say the least.

I agree that if you're going to give something away, then the charity is in the giving, not the recieving of thanks or praise or whatever it is you look for in doing that. The feeling of benevolence is nice but is mostly self-gratifying, and ultimately isn't the paragon of virtue that many like to see themselves as when giving stuff away. Just take your licks, and realize that (once again, like others have said) in the manner that you gave those items away, you're going to attract the SELECT few that are overly greedy, while the truly humble will not react to such an offer made.

Yeah, I have seen it. I cannot speak for my conditions being the same growing up, but not showing respect that was due as never done. You say thank you and please, sir or mam even if the rotten #@#% didn't deserve it in your opinion :-D. I had a recent one where some guy wanted to go to UW with me...i say, sure and take him along on my dime (or plat if you will). I like to chit chat when i farm, it passes the time...telling me to shut up was rather impolite....with the silence i could have been doing it my self. I dont know if people are more greedy or just it is more noticable...but i blame the fact that you can say something and disconnect and never see the person again, which prompts it....goodness knows a punch in the fact used to cure all disrespect where i came from

I used to give away collector items in LA and AC all the time. The majority of the people would ask for more than 1 after I gave them one, and become angry when I wouldn't.

Hopefully a few people appreciated it, but it got bad enough that I stopped bothering with it. The feeling that it was going to people that were just going to try to resell the items after didn't do it for me.

It wasn't that I wanted appreciation, I just wanted to know it was actually helping someone who needed it. I didn't feel like donating to some dude's fissure armor fund.

This is true, I usually give free stuff away to good group members (it's really nice to receive thanks for healing), or low lvl ppl who are trying to sell really crappy stuff i usually get asked wtf i'm on when i offer 2x their asking price and another item or two to go with it
